Quick answer

How Many Bags of Ballast per Cubic Metre of Concrete?

All-in ballast for site-mixed concrete, in 25kg bags and 850kg bulk bags, no waste added.

Page last reviewed 26 October 2026 by the UkToolCalc team

One m³ of 1:5 concrete needs about 1.7 tonnes of all-in ballast: 69 × 25kg bags, or two 850kg bulk bags plus one 25kg bag. Add 14 bags of cement.

Work out your own in the Concrete calculator
  • 1.7 tballast per m³ at 1:5
  • 69× 25kg bags per m³
  • 2 + 1bulk bags + one small bag
  • 14 bagsof cement with it

Ballast per cubic metre by mix

Per m³ of finished concrete, no waste added (add 5–10% for your job).

MixBallast25kg bags850kg bulk bagsCement (25kg)
1:4 (driveways)1.64 t662 (just enough)17
1:5 (slabs, bases)1.71 t692 + one 25kg bag14
1:6 (footings)1.76 t712 + three 25kg bags12

Half a cubic metre needs half as much: about one bulk bag (or 33–36 small bags) and 6–9 bags of cement.

Two 850kg bulk bags fall a few kilos short of a full m³ at 1:5, so the concrete calculator rounds up to a third bag. In practice a 25kg bag tops it up, or you allow a little waste.

The sum

Dry materials ≈ 2,050kg per m³ Ballast = 2,050 − 2,050 ÷ (mix parts + 1) e.g. 1:5 → 2,050 − 342 = 1,708kg 25kg bags = 1,708 ÷ 25 = 69

Frequently asked questions

Are 25kg bags or bulk bags of ballast cheaper?

Bulk bags, by a long way. Above about 0.4 tonnes (16 small bags), one 850kg bulk bag usually costs less than the small bags it replaces.

Is a bulk bag of ballast 850kg or a tonne?

Most UK merchants sell 850kg bulk bags, but some sell 800kg or 1 tonne bags. Check the weight on the listing before you work out how many to order.

What is all-in ballast?

A ready-mixed blend of sharp sand and gravel (usually 20mm and down), so you only add cement and water to make concrete.
