Concrete, Sub-Base & Paving Calculators

Groundwork quantities for slabs, footings, patios, drives and paths: concrete in m³ or bags, sub-base and gravel in tonnes and bulk bags, and the spoil you'll dig out.

Groundwork in the right order

Almost every patio, drive, shed base or extension starts the same way: dig out, get rid of the spoil, lay and compact a sub-base, then add concrete, paving or gravel on top. The calculators above cover each step, and the project planners chain them together so you only enter your measurements once.

Volumes, tonnes and bags

Groundwork materials are sold in different ways. Concrete is ordered in cubic metres, sub-base and gravel by the tonne or 850kg bulk bag, and cement in 25kg bags. Each calculator converts your area and depth into all of these, using typical densities, and adds an allowance for compaction and waste.

Get the depth right

Under-building the sub-base is the most common reason patios sink and drives rut. Read the sub-base depth guide before you dig, and remember to allow for the paving and bedding layer when setting your finished levels below the damp-proof course.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a bulk bag of MOT Type 1 cover?

An 850kg bulk bag covers roughly 4–5m² at a compacted depth of 100mm. Exact coverage depends on the stone and how well it is compacted.

Should I mix concrete myself or order ready-mix?

Hand or mixer batching with 25kg cement and bulk ballast suits small jobs up to about 1m³. For larger slabs and footings, ready-mix is usually quicker, more consistent and often no dearer.

How deep should a patio sub-base be?

A typical garden patio has about 100mm of compacted MOT Type 1 under the bedding layer, rising to 150mm or more on soft ground or for drives. Our patio sub-base guide explains depths for each job.
