Why we built UkToolCalc.uk
Most material calculators online are American. They work in square feet, US gallons and 80lb bags, and assume building methods that don't match how things are done in Britain. If you're ordering from a UK builders' merchant, you need answers in 25kg bags, 850kg bulk bags, 215mm bricks, 2400 × 1200mm plasterboard and 1.83m fence panels.
UkToolCalc.uk is an independent website that does exactly that. Our calculators cover the jobs UK homeowners and tradespeople do most: from floor levelling, plastering and painting to bricklaying, concrete, patios, fencing and loft insulation. Every calculator is free, works on your phone and needs no sign-up.
How our calculators work
- Transparent formulas: each calculator page explains the formula it uses, with worked examples and tables, so you can check the maths yourself.
- Typical UK coverage rates: we base figures on published manufacturer data and common trade rules of thumb (for example 60 bricks per m² or 1.7kg of levelling compound per m² per mm).
- Sensible allowances: wastage, cuts, compaction and settlement are included and shown, and you can adjust most of them.
- Your prices: cost estimates use typical UK prices that you can overwrite with your merchant's.
Results are estimates. Products vary, so always check the data sheet for the exact product you're buying. Read our terms for more.
Privacy first
The calculators run in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to our server. We don't require accounts, and we only use Google Analytics (to see which calculators are popular) if you allow it in the cookie banner. See our privacy policy.
How the site is funded
UkToolCalc.uk is free to use. It's supported by adverts and by affiliate links to tools and materials on Amazon.co.uk. If you buy through those links we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Recommendations are chosen because they're relevant to the job, and advertisers have no influence over our calculators or guides.
