Roofing Calculators

Roof area, tiles, slates, battens and membrane, plus the gutters and downpipes to drain it, using UK tile gauges and 4m gutter lengths.

Measuring a roof safely

You don't need to climb on the roof to estimate materials. Measure the building's length and width from the ground, judge the pitch (many UK houses are between 30° and 45°), and the roof tile calculator works out the true slope area for gable, hipped and lean-to roofs.

Tiles, slates and battens

Coverage depends on the tile and its gauge (the spacing of the battens). Large interlocking concrete tiles cover around 10 per square metre, while small plain tiles need about 60. The calculator includes battens, breathable membrane and ridge tiles so you can compare options before getting quotes.

Gutters and downpipes

The guttering calculator turns your runs into 4m lengths, brackets, unions, stop ends, outlets and 2.5m downpipes, and checks whether your gutter size can cope with the roof area it drains. It's useful for planning a replacement or pricing a quote you've been given.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out roof area from the ground?

Measure the building's footprint and estimate the pitch. The roof slope is longer than the plan by a factor that depends on the pitch: about 1.15 times at 30° and 1.41 times at 45°. The roof tile calculator does this for you.

How many gutter brackets do I need?

Allow a bracket about every 1m along the gutter, plus one close to each joint, outlet and stop end. The guttering calculator counts these from your gutter runs.

Do I need a roofer?

Working at height is dangerous. Small gutter and ridge repairs from a properly set-up tower or ladder can be DIY, but re-roofing usually needs scaffolding and an experienced roofer.
