Floors, Walls & Decorating Calculators

From bare studs to the final coat of paint: sheets, bags, tins, rolls and lengths for every stage of an indoor job.

Plan the whole room

Interior jobs follow a sequence, and getting the quantities right at each stage saves extra trips to the merchant. The calculators above are grouped so you can work through a room from the frame to the finish.

Walls and ceilings

  • Stud wall: CLS studs, plates and noggins for a partition wall. See the stud wall guide for building regs and soundproofing.
  • Plasterboard: 2400 × 1200mm sheets, screws or dot-and-dab adhesive.
  • Plaster: bags of Multi-Finish, Board Finish, Bonding or Hardwall.

Finishing

The paint, wallpaper and skirting calculators cover decorating, and the worktop calculator handles kitchen lengths and joints. To do a whole room in one go, try the redecorating planner.

Frequently asked questions

What order should I do a room in?

Usually: first-fix (studs, cables, pipes), plasterboard, plaster or skim, floor levelling, then decorating, with flooring and skirting near the end. Painting the ceiling and walls before fitting new flooring keeps drips off it.

How long should new plaster dry before painting?

A typical skim coat needs about 1–2 weeks to dry in a warm, ventilated room, longer in winter. Seal it with a thinned mist coat of emulsion before the top coats.

How much extra flooring or tiles should I buy?

Allow around 10% for straight laying in a simple room, and 15% or more for diagonal or herringbone patterns, lots of cuts or large tiles. Buy everything from the same batch.
