Building a double-skin wall? Double the bricks, cement and sand.

Don't forget

  • The footing: a concrete strip about twice the wall's width. Size it with the foundation calculator.
  • Below-ground courses: add them to the height before you count bricks.
  • The coping: a brick-on-edge or coping stone stops rain soaking in from the top.

The step-by-step garden wall guide covers the footing, piers and coping, with a priced planner.

Frequently asked questions

Single or double skin for a garden wall?

Single skin is fine for low walls up to about 1m with piers every 2–3m. For taller or free-standing walls, a double-skin (one-brick) wall is far sturdier and looks the same from both sides, but it needs twice the bricks and mortar.

Do I count the bricks below ground?

Yes. Walls usually start two or three courses below ground on the concrete footing. Add those courses (75mm each) to the height before you work out the bricks.

How many courses is a 900mm wall?

Each course of standard bricks with a 10mm joint is 75mm, so a 900mm wall is 12 courses.
