60 bricks per m² for a single-skin (half-brick) wall, and 120 per m² for a double-skin (one-brick) wall. Buy about 66 per m² to allow 10% for cuts and breakages.
Figures include 10% for cuts. Mortar is a 4:1 building sand and cement mix.

How to work out your wall area
Wall area = length × height − doors, windows and gates
Bricks = wall area × 60 (or 120) × 1.1
Example: a wall 4m long and 1.5m high is 6m². In single skin that's 6 × 60 = 360 bricks, plus 10% = 396 bricks.
The brick calculator does this for any size and adds the cement, sand and an estimated cost. For the footing under the wall, use the foundation calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Why 60 bricks per m² and not 59?
Each brick plus its 10mm joints covers 225 × 75mm of wall face, which is 59.26 bricks per m². The trade rounds this up to 60, and you add 5–10% on top for cuts and breakages.
How many bricks per m² in a cavity wall?
The brick outer leaf is still 60 bricks per m². The inner leaf is usually 100mm blockwork at 10 blocks per m², tied across the cavity with about 2.5 wall ties per m².
How much mortar per m² of brickwork?
About 54kg of dry mortar per m² of single-skin wall: roughly 44kg of building sand and 10kg of cement in a 4:1 mix. A double-skin wall needs about twice as much.
