Why does a 3m deck need as many boards as a 3.6m one is wide? Each 3m row is cut from a 3.6m board, and the 0.6m offcut is too short to reuse. A 3.6m-long deck uses every board in full.
The sum
Rows = deck width ÷ (board width + gap), rounded up
Boards = rows × deck length × 1.1 ÷ board length (at least one board per row)
With 144mm boards and 5mm gaps there are about 6.7 rows per metre of deck width, so roughly 6.7 metres of board per m² of deck, plus 10% for offcuts.
Which way should decking boards run?
Across the joists, and usually lengthways away from the house, or along the main view. Choose a deck length that suits the board length to cut down on waste.
How far apart should decking joists be?
400mm centres for softwood boards. Composite boards often need 300–350mm; check the manufacturer's instructions.
