Quick answer

How Much Gravel Do I Need for a Driveway?

20mm decorative gravel laid 50mm deep on a compacted sub-base.

A 6 × 5m driveway (30m²) needs about 2.6 tonnes of 20mm gravel at 50mm deep: 4 × 850kg bulk bags. One bulk bag covers about 10m².

Work out your own in the Gravel & Sand calculator
  • ~10m²per 850kg bag at 50mm
  • 20mmgravel for driveways
  • 50mmgravel depth, no deeper
  • 150mmMOT sub-base underneath

Gravel by driveway size

20mm gravel, 50mm deep, 5% extra, 850kg bulk bags.

3 × 6 m (one car)18 m²1.6 t2
5 × 6 m30 m²2.6 t4
6 × 8 m (two cars)48 m²4.2 t5
10 × 5 m50 m²4.3 t6

The sum

Tonnes = area (m²) × depth (m) × 1.65 × 1.05 30m² at 50mm: 30 × 0.05 × 1.65 × 1.05 = 2.6 t

The gravel is the easy part. The sub-base under it takes far more material: the MOT Type 1 calculator works out the tonnes, and the excavation calculator the dig and skip.

Frequently asked questions

How deep should driveway gravel be?

About 40–50mm of 20mm gravel is right for a driveway. Deeper gravel is hard to walk and drive on, because it moves under tyres and feet.

What goes under driveway gravel?

A compacted sub-base of MOT Type 1, usually 150mm for cars, with a permeable membrane under it. Gravel grids on top stop the stones spreading and rutting.

Is 10mm or 20mm gravel better for a driveway?

20mm is better for driveways: it stays put under tyres and doesn't stick in shoe treads. 10mm pea shingle suits paths.
