There are 50 block paving bricks per m² (200 × 100mm). A 6 × 4m driveway needs about 1,320 blocks in herringbone, plus 105 edging blocks, 10 bulk bags of MOT Type 1 and 3 of sharp sand.

Block paving by driveway size

200 × 100mm blocks, herringbone (+10%), edging all round, 150mm MOT, 40mm sharp sand, 850kg bulk bags.

The sub-base is the big order: a 6 × 4m drive needs nearly 8 tonnes of MOT. Digging it out makes a lot of soil too; see what size skip for muck away.

The sum

Blocks = area (m²) × 50 × 1.1 6 × 4m: 24 × 50 × 1.1 = 1,320

The block paving calculator also works out kiln-dried jointing sand and the concrete haunching for the edges.

Frequently asked questions

How many 200 × 200mm paving blocks per m²?

25 per m². 300 × 100mm blocks are about 33 per m².

How deep should the sub-base be for block paving?

150mm of compacted MOT Type 1 for a driveway that takes cars, and about 100mm for paths and patios. On soft clay, go deeper or add a geotextile membrane.

Why herringbone for a driveway?

Herringbone locks the blocks together, so they don't creep under car tyres turning and braking. It needs a few more cuts, so allow 10% extra instead of 5%.
