How Much Does an 850kg Bulk Bag Cover?

Coverage of one 850kg bulk bag at common depths, before any allowance for waste or an uneven dig.

Page last reviewed 26 October 2026 by the UkToolCalc team

One 850kg bulk bag covers about 10m² of 20mm gravel at 50mm deep, 4m² of MOT Type 1 at 100mm compacted, or 20m² of sharp sand at 25mm (a patio bed).

Work out your own in the Gravel & Sand calculator
  • ~10m²20mm gravel at 50mm
  • ~4m²MOT Type 1 at 100mm
  • ~20m²sharp sand at 25mm
  • ~5m²all-in ballast at 100mm

The calculators add 5% for an uneven surface, so they buy one bag for up to about 9.8m² of gravel at 50mm.

Using a 1 tonne bag instead? Multiply by 1.18. An 800kg bag: multiply by 0.94.

The sum

Coverage (m²) = bag weight (t) ÷ (density (t/m³) × depth (m)) 20mm gravel at 50mm: 0.85 ÷ (1.65 × 0.05) = 10.3m²

For your own area, use the gravel calculator (gravel, sand, ballast) or the MOT Type 1 calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many m³ is an 850kg bulk bag?

It depends on the material: about 0.5m³ of gravel or sand, and about 0.4m³ of compacted MOT Type 1. That's why a bag that looks full covers less than people expect.

Is a bulk bag of topsoil the same?

Topsoil is usually sold by volume, not weight: a typical bulk bag holds about 0.75m³, covering about 7.5m² at 100mm deep before it settles.

Should I add extra?

Yes: 5% for a level area and 10% for an uneven dig. The calculators add this for you.
